Located in the heart of Spitalfields is a premier London attraction and one of the finest surviving Victorian Market Halls in the capital. Nestled in the cobbled streets between Brick Lane and Bishopsgate, Old Spitalfields Market is steeped in history; a market has operated on the site since the 1600s, while Jack the Ripper preyed on women in the surrounding streets. The fruit and vegetable market relocated to New Spitalfields Market in 1991.
In 1682 (before Old Spitalfields Market as we know it). Charles II grants a Letters Patent to a silk thrower by the name of John Balch, allowing a market for flesh, fowl and roots in Spitalfields, an area known as a ‘stronghold of Noncomformity’.
“We’ve had unprecedented level of demand for this extra day – from shoppers, visitors and traders - and now, finally, we can introduce the market that everyone has been waiting for and just in time for Christmas too.
With our various partners, we have assembled a truly distinctive line up – from vintage and contemporary fashion, arts and crafts through to antiques and collectables. Our first Saturday will give a taste of what’s to come - giving visitors to our vibrant and historic part of the capital yet another reason to visit us.”
